BLACK CITY is out today! We’re so excited about this YA debut, with its heart-pounding action and romance—and the best part is, the sequel, PHOENIX, is on its way in Summer of 2013!
Today’s Penguin Teen Author Spotlight joins us from all the way across the pond! Elizabeth Richards lives in the UK, but luckily shared her wonderful novel with the US by publishing it with Penguin Teen. Hailed as a post-apocalyptic Romeo and Juliet, Black City is definitely the book to pick up if you’re looking for romance! Elizabeth’s book has all the trappings of a tragic love story…plus vampires likes you’ve never seen them before. There’s a good reason it’s a 2012 Breathless Reads pick! But until tomorrow comes, we’ll have to pass the time by getting to know Elizabeth!
Name: Elizabeth Richards
Novel: Black City
Available: November 13, 2012
Who’s your favorite author, living or dead? It’s an obvious choice, but it has to be JK Rowling. She’s an absolute genius, and I’m obsessed with Harry Potter!
What’s your favorite thing about your book? Ash! *dreamy sigh* His character popped into my head one night while I was watching a movie, and I couldn’t get him out of my mind. I simply had to write a story about this sexy, drug-dealing, supernatural boy who gets a heartbeat when he meets his true love. Ash is my book boyfriend—I love him to bits.
If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? Katniss Everdeen! If you’re going to be on a deserted island with anyone, then she’s your gal. She’s got more survival skills than Bear Grylls. Mmmm…then again, thinking on it so more, she doesn’t like making small talk, so things could get a little dull after a while. Maybe I’ll invite Edward Cullen instead. He knows how to hunt, he’s got over a hundred years worth of stories to tell me, and if I get sick or badly injure myself, then he can just turn me into a vamp. Plus, he’s not too shabby to look at.
Where do you write? Generally I write in my living room, but if I need a change of scenery, then I go to my local pub, the Black Horse (photo above!). You can usually find me on the comfy sofa beside the hearth. It’s a very cozy and warm atmosphere, plus there’s no internet connection there, so I can’t be tempted to go on Twitter.
Who is your favorite hero or heroine of history? Emmeline Pankhurst.
Do you tweet? What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever tweeted? I’m always on Twitter! I once sent Stephen Fry a cheeky tweet, saying ‘Mmmm, I wonder what attracted you to the role in House of Boys’ then linked off to the imdb.com page of the hot, blond lead actor. He DM’d me, saying ‘Naughty child *slap*’. Not many people can claim they’ve been virtually slapped by Stephen Fry! He’s brilliant, I love him!!!
What is your favorite season? Autumn. I love everything about it: the falling leaves, the crisp air, the rolling mists, and the spooky atmosphere. It has such a beautiful, haunting romance about it. Plus I love, love, love Halloween and Bonfire Night (AKA Guy Fawkes Night, which is a UK holiday celebrated on November 5th) – it basically means we get a week of fireworks displays, bonfires, pumpkin carving, and creepy fun-fares!
If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go? I’d like to go and check out HD 40307g in the constellation Pictor, to see if it could/does sustain life.
Do you have any writing rituals? Because I stay up late (I’m in the UK but working on US time), I generally like to drag my carcass out of bed around 9.30am, pop into the shower and decide what I’m going to work on that day, then head downstairs (still in a bit of a daze) and turn on Homes Under The Hammer. While that’s on in the background, I’ll go through any urgent emails, and then once I’ve fully woken up, I’ll crack on with my day’s work. If I get stuck on something, then I do the washing up, walk around the house, lie down on the sofa and listen to music, or change location, as I find that helps clear my mind. I usually finish my working day sometime between 2am-4am.
What is your idea of earthly happiness? That everyone is healthy, have a roof over their heads, and enough food in their bellies.
What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? Ooooh…gosh, there’s been so many! It was probably the Within Temptation gig at the O2 Academy in Birmingham, back in 2011. It was just the perfect mixture of great venue, fantastic music and brilliant company. I went with one of my closest friends, and after the show she gave me a pep-talk over a bag of chips, and told me to quit my day job and focus full-time on writing. So glad that I did!
What are you currently working on? I’ve just done copy edits for Phoenix and am now cracking on with Book #3 of the Black City series!
Thanks for joining us all the way from the UK, Elizabeth! We already can’t wait for Phoenix!
